Now an internationally known author, Brown traveled to Europe to attend a peace conference in Paris and to lecture on abolition in England. He also began to attend lectures on medicine. While maintaining a rigorous speaking schedule, he also published two more books. In 1852 he published Three Years in Europe, or Places I Have Seen and People I Have Met, the first travel book written by an African American. The following year, he published Clotel; or, the President’s Daughter, the first African-American novel.
She majored in English at Wilson Junior College and graduated in 1936, after which she found employment with the Youth Council of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). , himself an aspiring writer and fellow employee at the NAACP, with whom she had two children. Brooks continued to hone her poetic skills in the early 1940s by attending a workshop with her husband, conducted on Chicago’s South Side by Inez Cunningham Stark.
